CERG’s Minnesota Avenue Center turned up the warmth this winter with its annual Winter Wonderland Ball, a celebration led by Center Director Diana Ginn that brought together children, families, and staff from across Northeast DC for an afternoon rooted in joy, resilience, and community.
On a chilly December day, families stepped in from the winter air into a space transformed—snowflake décor lining the walls, music filling the room, and the unmistakable energy of a community showing up for one another. For many of the parents and young children at the heart of CERG’s work, this wasn’t just a school event. It was a moment to gather, to celebrate, and to be seen in a space built with them in mind.
Parents sat down to share a warm meal with their children, breaking bread in a setting that felt both festive and familiar. Conversations flowed easily between families and staff, strengthening relationships that extend far beyond the classroom. In a city where daily life can move fast and resources can feel stretched, these moments of connection matter. They are part of how community is built and sustained.
The Winter Wonderland Ball is a reflection of CERG’s deeper commitment to Northeast DC. Through intentional programming and events like this, the organization continues to invest in strengthening family engagement, encouraging open communication, and building trust between educators and the communities they serve. It is work grounded in consistency, care, and an understanding of what it takes to support children and families in a meaningful way.
Under 15 years of Director Diana Ginn’s leadership, the Minnesota Avenue Center continues to model what that looks like in practice. The Winter Wonderland Ball was not just about decorations or dancing—it was about creating a space where families could come in from the cold, share a meal, and leave feeling more connected than when they arrived.
In the end, the event delivered exactly what it set out to do: warmth in every sense of the word—through food, through laughter, and through a community that continues to show up for its children, even in the heart of winter.
