Signs Your Child Is Ready to Start Preschool

Attending preschool for the first time can be a daunting experience for both children and parents. However, determining if your child is ready to attend preschool in Southeast, Washington, D.C. is easier when you know what signs to look out for.

As an education research group in Washington, D.C., we will share the signs that indicate school readiness for children:

  • The ability to follow simple instructions.
The ability to follow two or three-step instructions is a good sign your child is ready to attend preschool. When your child is capable of concentrating on a task for a longer period, they are likely capable of following instructions and completing tasks in class without getting distracted.
  • Independence from their parents.
One of the most stressful aspects of attending preschool is the transition period of spending all day with a parent to spending several hours away from home. The ability to spend time alone is a good indicator your child is ready to spend the day in the company of their teacher and schoolmates.
  • The stamina to complete a school day.
Longer school days have a tendency to be a bit longer compared to what kids are used to at home. Another indicator your child is ready for preschool is when they’re able to get through the day without necessarily having a predetermined naptime.
